Since 2002, WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE, a landmark exhibition about the physical and spiritual beauty of black women, has been traveling continuously around the United States. It has also traveled twice to Europe. At every venue it has been enthusiastically received by the media and the public. Typical of the general reception, a visitor to the Pittsburgh installation wrote in the guestbook, "We have become art!". This simple statement speaks volumes about the photographic treatment of the exhibit's subjects. Rarely has the the black woman been so wondrously portrayed. Like great music each image is an amazing experience that elevates the subject(s) and the viewers. The exhibition is an incredible exercise in "seeing".
A unique feature of the exhibition is the option offered to presenters to have women from hosting communities photographed and their images images included in the exhibit. Many have exercised this option. As a result the core collection of images has grown to include hundreds of images of Black American Women of all ages, occupations and social strata. Over the recent years this traveling exhibition has become a living and evolving mosaic of the modern Black American Woman.
